Hoops at Fire/Water!

Hoops took a weekend trip down with Springfield Library Associate Sarah Hodge-Wetherbe and her family to the Fire/Water festival in Providence RI! It’s an amazing riverfront festival where boats travel the canals after dark lighting pyres of floating wood so the water is illuminated by bonfires! Lights, candles, and fires are everywhere and there are many wonderful people about performing for the crowds!

Hoops had to make sure the beds were comfy!

Here is one of the street performers, a Ghost girl who stood stone still until you gave her a tip. Then she would blow you a kiss and change poses.

You could take a romantic gondolier ride down the canal.

Hoops and Sarah’s mom, Brenda, wait patiently for darkness to fall!

The river is ablaze with Light! This was Hoops favorite part!

The park was also lit with paper star lanterns! Hoops thought it kind of looked like we were walking through outer space!

These Gargoyle performers came in full costume to perch completely still. But if you gave them a tip, they would grasp your hand or pat your head and change poses. Hoops thought they were really cool...but some of the little kids were a bit scared of them!

Hoops had to have his morning coffee before heading home Sunday morning. He said it was the coolest festival in the universe!

First Hoops got to meet the staff including Youth Librarian Ms. Laura...

and Circulation Assistant Erica!

then Hoops wanted to read everything the library had on his favorite sport, BASKETBALL.

Hoops got to meet some cool teen volunteers like Bria...

and Nadine...

and helped make some Pokeballs at a Pokemon party!

Hoops also hung out with some of the teens during Crafternoon and learned how to make SLIME. Everyone at the Millicent Library really enjoyed visiting with Hoops. He's welcome back anytime! A big thank you to Sarah Hodge-Wetherbe for sending Hoops to us from the Springfield Library system!

Ella and Sofia's aliens, Spacey and Alien Keeley decided to check out moon pies. First they read the book Jimmy Zangwow's Out-of-This-World Moon-Pie Adventure by Tony DiTerlizzi and then they made Moon Pies together! You can make a moon pie, too. Check it out here.

Hoops is a STAR!

To start his earthly education, Hoops (The Springfield City Library Alien) visited behind the scenes of the Country Players Production of “Oliver” on their last night of dress rehersal. He learned all about what it takes to put a show together, and got to meet all the stars that make the show so special.

Here are just some of his many new theater friends. From top to bottom we have David Peck, who plays the evil Bill Sykes, Sue MacDonald who plays the greedy Widow Corney, Keara MacDonald as the mischevious and artful Dodger, and Hoop's library friend Sarah Hodge-Wetherbe as the Strawberry Seller.

Hoops got to learn a lot about what it takes to put on a stage production, and had a great time meeting all the cast. He was thinking maybe next year they could put on a staged version of “The Day the Earth Stood Still” with himself as the star! Who knows!

Two of the Martians from Boston landed at the Red White and Blueberry Festival in Hammonton, NJ back in June. Zark and Zedina soaked up some real Americana that day. They also discovered that they sure take their blueberries seriously in Hammonton....

These girls each decorated the paper Martian designs, then attached them to straws to make them easier to carry around ... notice that one has a 'baby Martian' ... very cute!

On Tuesday, the Upton Town Library hosted a special drop-in craft day, giving children of all ages the opportunity to stop in and make a Space Buddy to share in their Starship Adventures this summer. Local artist & illustrator Lauren Scheuer, who designed our Space Buddy, dropped by to join the fun, and posed for this picture with our staff. Our newest circulation clerk, Eileen Rakitin, made T-shirts for all staff members, using Lauren's design!

Elaró Elkross at the Kennedy Space Center

Elaró Elkross landed in Weymouth Massachusetts and decided

to hitch a ride to Florida with Miss Amy. While he was there, he

met the Astronaut, Julie Payette who is scheduled to fly on the

Space Shuttle "Endeavor" this July. He also visited the Kennedy

Space Center and watched a rocket launch carrying the Lunar

Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and the Lunar Crater Observation

and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS). Check out his slideshow.
